Kuwait Energy Thermal Power Projects
Kuwait has experienced a growing power shortage over the past two years. In June 2024, the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy scheduled power outages
Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles. Kuwait is negotiating a major battery storage project with a discharge capacity of up to 1.5 gigawatts and total energy storage of between 4 and 6 gigawatt-hours, in a bid to ease chronic power shortages, a senior electricity ministry official said on Monday.
The battery storage initiative is part of a broader push to stabilise Kuwait's grid and reduce reliance on fossil fuels during peak demand periods. If implemented, it would mark one of the largest energy storage deployments in the region.
The residential electricity price in Kuwait is KWD 0.014 per kWh or USD 0.045. The electricity price for businesses is KWD 0.025 kWh or USD 0.081. These retail prices were collected in June 2024 and include the cost of power, distribution and transmission, and all taxes and fees. Compare Kuwait with 150 other countries.
This paper has presented a detailed analysis of capacity and availability of electrical power stations in Kuwait. The analysis show that as Kuwait population has increased over the past 34 years by more than 3 times, the demand for power consumption has increased by almost 7 times.
