Battery Energy Storage Systems: Key to
When renewable power production exceeds demand, batteries store excess electricity for later use, therefore allowing power
As power systems increasingly integrate variable renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, the need for flexible and reliable power grids that can supply electricity at all times has become essential. Battery energy storage system (BESS) can address these supply-demand gaps by providing flexibility to balance supply and demand in real-time.
The system comprises several components: Battery Modules, Control Components, Inverters, and Sensors: BESS use these materials to differentiate the system as a power system rather than simply a battery. The battery modules store energy, while control components, inverters, and sensors ensure the system operates efficiently and safely.
By effectively storing energy, BESS balances supply and demand, ensuring a reliable electricity flow. These systems offer services such as maintaining grid frequency and shifting energy use to different times, enhancing grid reliability and supporting renewable energy sources like solar and wind.
If a BESS product cannot meet these backup power requirements as mandated by the code or the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), an external backup power source needs to be provided. Options for backup power include local distribution network feeders (if available with sufficient kVA rating) or backup generators.
