The gas-fired Cuciurgan power station, was the largest power station in Moldova, is located in Transnistria, on the shores of the Cuciurgan Reservoir bordering Ukraine. In 2024 it generated over three quarters of Moldova's electricity. Commissioned in 1964, it formerly burned some coal and fuel oil.
According to Constantin Borosan, State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, once installed, these plants will increase Moldova's electricity generation capacity by at least 125 MW, and if the 10 smaller plants are received, the total will reach 225 MW.
