US battery storage boom extends into 2025; nearly 19 GW under
US developers of large-scale battery storage stations have 18.7 GW of new capacity under construction, according to S&P Global Energy Market Intelligence data,
Over the years, new technologies for storing electricity were emerging, which have led to a variety of storage systems today, all differing in the application, costs, and profitability. It is forecasted by International Energy Agency (IEA) that global installed storage capacity will expand by 56% in the upcoming years .
The facility will serve as a large-scale battery energy storage system capable of charging from, and discharging into, the New York power grid. When fully functional, the 100MW battery energy storage project will be able to discharge electricity to the grid particularly during peak demand.
However, cost, material constraints and battery degradation rates represent a barrier to long-term, utility-scale applications. As such, the power sector is looking beyond traditional storage solutions to diversify, seeking technologies that can be tailored to niche conditions while meeting grid demands.
In response to rising demand and the challenges renewables have added to grid balancing efforts, the power industry has seen an uptick in energy storage project activity, with more than 4,000 storage projects in the pipeline globally, according to GlobalData.
