Powering Albania''s Future: Feasibility Study for the 1200 MW
GOPA Tech undertook a comprehensive power system study for the PS Moglice Extension in Albania, focusing on the feasibility of a 1200 MW pump storage hydro plant.
Changing weather patterns over the years have forced the country to import energy to cover domestic needs, as a lack of storage capacity requires Albania to sell its generated power during peak months of production.
Planning is thus crucial in avoiding piecemeal development approaches, ad-hoc decision making, and contradictory investments and development support. Albania's energy sector is guided by its National Energy Sector Strategy 2030, along with the National Renewable Energy Action Plan 2018-2020 and the Gas Master Plan.
“It's a good power project for Albania,” Excelerate Chief Executive Officer Steven Kobos said about the floating plants deal. “Obviously we hope it will lead to the opportunity to deliver natural gas and sell natural gas into Europe from that access.”
In addition to eliminating the electricity deficit and taking electrification to new sectors, Albania can increase its potential to unlock new industries and investment using clean energy. The country can explore opportunities to produce green hydrogen through solar and wind power.
